This volume analyses the way that changes in the comics industry, book trade and webcomics distribution have shaped the publication of long-form comics. It pays particular attention to how the concept of the graphic novel developed through the twentieth century. Art historians, journalists, and reviewers debated whether it was possible for a comic to be a novel - debates that accelerated after the term 'graphic novel' was coined by the comics fan Richard Kyle in 1964. This study underlines the proximity of the graphic novel to other media, showing that this cultural form is not only the meeting place between periodical comics and books, but that graphic novels are in dialogue with films, posters and computer screens.

On a longtemps cherché à savoir si la bande dessinée était un art. Mais le développement des études de bande dessinée au cours des dernières décennies a largement contribué à transformer le questionnement lui-même : il s’agit aujourd’hui de comprendre la place qu’elle occupe dans le système médiatique. Quelles sont les circulations médiatiques qui structurent la bande dessinée ? Quels phénomènes d’hybridation se jouent entre la bande dessinée et les médias qu’elle rencontre (photographie, peinture, littérature, arts vidéoludiques, etc.) ? Quelles formes de mémoire, quels usages de la citation, quels mécanismes d’appropriation sont à l’œuvre dans les bandes dessinées ? Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons's Watchmen has been widely hailed as a landmark in the development of the graphic novel. It was not only aesthetically groundbreaking but also anticipated future developments in politics, literature, and intellectual property. Demonstrating a keen eye for historical detail, Considering Watchmen gives readers a new appreciation of just how radical Moore and Gibbons's blend of gritty realism and formal experimentation was back in 1986. The book also considers Watchmen's place in the history of the comics industry, reading the graphic novel's playful critique of superhero marketing alongside Alan Moore's public statements about the rights to the franchise. Andrew Hoberek examines how Moore and Gibbons engaged with the emerging discourses of neoconservatism and neoliberal capitalism, ideologies that have only become more prominent in subsequent years.
